About this Program

The Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History and the Hip-Hop50ATL Consortium in collaboration with the City of Atlanta’s Office of the Mayor host the first in a summer-long film screening series to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop.

On Thursday, July 27th we'll be screening the documentary film Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap with the post-film conversation moderated by Soul Food Cypher @soulfoodcypher

The craft. The history. The power. All these elements of the hip-hop movement are discussed with director Ice-T and the legends he interviews—Afrika Bambaataa, Eminem, Nas, Mos Def, Kanye West, Chuck D, KRS-One, Snoop Dogg, Run-DMC, and Ice Cube—in this compelling and gritty feature-length documentary. An Official Selection of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap explores and pays tribute to this original American art form.

Soul Food Cypher (SFC) is a 501-(C)(3) non-profit organization that utilizes freestyle rap and lyricism to transform individuals and communities.

SFC showcases the positive aspects of rap through their cypher events, tournaments, and community outreach. Their aim is to provide lyricists (rappers) with a safe and nurturing environment where their voice and artistry can grow.

They aim to solidify the art of freestyling as a genuine aesthetic to the wider artistic community and carry this rich tradition to the next generation.

Join us Thursday, July 27th at 6:30 p.m., as we celebrate Hip-Hop culture.
